Sample Preparation and Characterization Facility Official-Website
1. In order to get independent access to our lab at CSSB, there is a mandatory CSSB safety training to be performed prior getting a transponder (lab key). The CSSB safety training will be offered every first Wednesday of the month ( either in German or English).
The CSSB safety trainings are be held in the Lecture Hall at 9 am.
2. After attending to CSSB safety training, a signed CSSB access form (request to Angelica Struve at astruve@embl-hamburg.de for accessing the SPC core facility at EMBL Hamburg) has to be handed in to CSSB caretaker, Julian Fisch ( office at the 2nd Fl at CSSB; email address: julian.fisch@cssb-hamburg.de).
Here it is the schedule for the next CSSB safety trainings for 2026 - on Wednesdays, 9 am in the CSSB lecture hall.
| Date | Time | Where | Presenter | Language |
| 06.06.26 | 9-10h | CSSB Lecture Hall | Emil Gustavsson | English |
General aspects of CSSB safety training
- This safety instruction will be offered every first Wednesday (in general) of the month
- It is addressed to all employees working at CSSB (and DESY), i.e. technicians, caretakers, bachelor/master/PhD students, facility guests, as well as project managers and secretaries who do not perform any work in the laboratories, but at CSSB
- Will be presented (in a rotating scheme) by CSSB project leaders,
- Includes occupational safety and biosafety (S1/S2) topics, and allows to enter the laboratories at CSSB between 8 am-6 pm (with transponder),
- Work of any kind in the labs is still only allowed after a task-specific instruction by the responsible person of each laboratory (+ open access via transponder 24/7),
- For the task-specific instructions you will be invited separately upon your request, and those instructions will be rather short and more specific,
- For accessing and working in our core facilities, both the general and the task-specific instruction will be necessary,
- The CSSB safety instruction is compliant with the DESY campus regulations, which implies that CSSB members no longer need to participate in the DESY-DOOR nor the DESY General Safety Training, if work will be only performed at CSSB,
- Special training for e.g. working with cryogenic gases is still necessary and your respective employer/lab operator will inform you whether additional, partner-specific instructions are necessary.
3. On-site training is mandatory prior to using instruments in our facility. Please initiate a training on the instrument you would like to use by e-maling us at spc@embl-hamburg.de
4. Please complete the online EMBL safety training before visiting our SPC core facility at smis.embl-hamburg.de
Transponders
DESY IT team at CSSB - Lena and Maren - have taken over from Julian (previous caretaker at CSSB). Please update your transponder at the terminal (left side of the science bridge door) if changes have already been requested. The validity can also be updated at the terminal no later than 4 days after the safety instruction.
Should you lose your transponder, please report in writing to IT@cssb-hamburg.de.
If you have any questions, changes or new applications, Lena and Maren are available Monday to Thursday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the IT office O1.229 and via phone: 040 / 8998-87515. Additional availability: https://xwiki.desy.de/xwiki/bin/view/CSSBITDOC/User%20Support/?srid=M4UajLUU
Important Notes:
A new transponder is giving after attending the CSSB safety training for the first time and corresponding access is giving for each particular lab/office after submitting the access form ( to be obtained from each lab you need to have access to). The transponder will be assigned an expiration date (12 months, valid until the end of the corresponding month), which applies to all access permissions and buildings stored on it (technically not possible to assign separate expiration dates). If you require access to multiple buildings, you may consider applying for an additional transponder to allow for separate expiration dates. Please contact us to discuss this option.
Please notify immediately if access to the CSSB is no longer required. We will then remove access to the CSSB areas and the expiration date from your transponder.
Once we receive the completed and signed transponder authorization form and the serial number of your transponder, IT will program it and notify you as soon as it is ready.
Please do not hesitate to contact IT if you have any questions.
